Kindergarten-Grade 3—This offering includes a sweet, anti-materialistic message but is problematic over a number of levels. The weekend before Father's Day, a snail wants to get the perfect present for his dad. The youngster isn't great at making things, along with the cool neighborhood store has closed early. What is he to do? Langley discovers the best gift ever: spending some time with Dad because they enjoy nature together. The text contains many long sentences and hyphenated phrases, for example "Amazing Auto-Select-Sports-Only Remote Control," making it a hardship on inexperienced readers. Older children who can handle the text might think the cartoon-style illustrations, while pleasant and colorful, are babyish. Even as a read-aloud, the storyline demands careful listening skills. Additionally, the humor seems forced and uneven. The initial half with the book is funnier compared to second, and the first picture sets readers up for potty humor (Langley sits on a toilet) that never materializes. Langley Snail is focused on Father's Day. He is not crafty, so his homemade presents always bomb. He's got some funds to spend, but his snail's pace gets him to the store after it closes. Besides, his friends have already snapped up the neat gifts, such as the "Super-Duper-Golf-O-Matic-Home-Ball-Washer." Tomorrow is Sunday, and Langley's got nothin'. But as they walks dejectedly home, he finds a perfectly round, lilac-colored stone. The real key spies three baby birds of their nest. A lightbulb goes off: Langley leaves a note for his father requesting his presence over a nature walk. Together, both the explore the woods, and Mr. Snail says their walk will be the best present ever--and Langley agrees. The sprightly watercolors, drawing inspiration from both comics and woodcuts, don't always scream nature, nevertheless the gentle humor carries the afternoon (except, perhaps, the picture of Langley about the toilet).
